Influential hoteliers discuss the evolving landscape of the hospitality industry, as observed by five notable women in the field

In the world of hospitality, a new generation of leaders is emerging, and five women are making their mark. From co-owning renowned urban resorts to leading historic hotels, these visionaries are challenging the status quo and redefining the industry.

Catherine Malouf co-owns The Calile hotel in Australia, which opened in 2018 and gained prominence in 2021 under her leadership. The Calile was named Australia's first 'urban resort' and earned a place in the prestigious World's 50 Best Hotel Awards in 2023 and 2024.

Vanessa Branson, owner of El Fenn hotel in Marrakech, entered the hospitality sector without awareness of any gender-based disadvantages. Today, she stands as a testament to the industry's progress.

The landscape of the hospitality workforce has shifted significantly. In 2023, women made up 51.2% of the workforce, outnumbering men in the sector. This change is evident in the stories of the remaining trailblazers.

Thelma West, co-founder of Casina Cinquepozzi hotel, comes from a background in the diamond and jewellery industry. After over two decades, she turned her eye to hospitality, working with incredible women in the industry, including architects, stone and marble experts, and restorers.

Amanda Hyndman is the chief operating officer of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, a role she has held since November 2024. Hyndman has spent 18 years with the group, holding positions in various countries.

The youngest of the five hoteliers is Innegrit Volkhardt, who took over the Bayerischer Hof in Munich in 1992. Although it is the most recently taken over among the five women mentioned, the Bayerischer Hof is a historic hotel in its fourth generation under her leadership.

These women face challenges but see a change in the industry's energy and a move towards a more balanced, collaborative approach. Valentina De Santis, CEO of Grand Hotel Tremezzo and Passalacqua hotel, is proud to see women holding key roles at the top of her company.

Catherine Malouf believes that the hospitality industry needs to provide more opportunities and support for women, including specific leadership programs, an inclusive work environment, pay equality, and conscious efforts to support gender diversity in senior management teams.

Despite the progress, the industry still has room for improvement. In 2023, only 30% of management and leadership positions were held by women. However, these trailblazers are paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable future.

Thelma West envisions a future where hotels are deeply personal, immersive experiences shaped by women's creativity, craftsmanship, and leadership. Valentina De Santis sees a future where the world values the core values in hospitality as feminine and appreciates the unparalleled contribution of women in the industry.

Thelma West is currently working on the restoration of an 18th-century manor house, preserving its history while blending in contemporary design. Her vision is a testament to the transformative power of women in the hospitality industry.

Vanessa Branson believes that gender is no longer an issue for western hoteliers and hopes to see more of the same with women in the industry. As these trailblazers continue to make their mark, the future of hospitality looks brighter and more inclusive than ever.
