Influencer and American pilot Ethan Guo discharged from Antarctic air base following a period of almost two months.
Ethan Guo, a social media influencer from Tennessee, was released from detention in Punta Arenas, Chile, after spending two months in a Chilean airbase in Antarctica. Guo had been detained for landing a plane in Chile's Antarctic territory without permission.
Upon his release, Guo expressed gratitude towards the Chilean people for their hospitality and care during his detention. He wore a Chilean national soccer team jersey as he disembarked from a navy ship.
Guo's lawyer, Jaime Barrientos, considers the arrest process as a "total exaggeration". Barrientos claims that Guo landed due to poor weather conditions and received authorization from Chilean authorities. However, it was revealed that Guo was authorized to only fly over Punta Arenas in southern Chile but headed for Antarctica in his Cessna 182Q.
During his detention, Guo learned Spanish and described his experience as "mundane" with "limited freedoms". He spent the freezing Antarctic winter temperatures plunging below zero, living in the airbase with limited communications.
Guo was attempting to become the youngest person to fly solo to all seven continents for a fundraising mission for cancer research. After his release, there is no information available about what Guo was initially doing in the two months after his release.
The search results do not contain information about the details of the agreement reached with authorities. Guo did not specify these details either. However, it is known that he was released on the condition that he donate the raised funds to a childhood cancer foundation within 30 days and leave the country as soon as possible.
Barrientos also expressed satisfaction with the agreement reached with authorities. He stated that Guo was treated like family by the Chilean people during his detention. Guo's detention has sparked discussions about the importance of proper authorization and adherence to regulations when flying in foreign territories.
