In a significant development, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a conversation on August 30, 2025, focusing on the peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

This discussion comes amidst Prime Minister Modi's two-day official visit to China, marking his first visit to the nation in seven years. The conversation with President Zelenskyy followed this visit, and the leaders discussed ways to further enhance cooperation in all areas of mutual interest.

During the conversation, Prime Minister Modi expressed India's support for the peaceful restoration of peace in Ukraine. He thanked President Zelenskyy for sharing his perspective on recent developments related to Ukraine. The Ukrainian President, in turn, expressed gratitude for India's dedication to peace and dialogue.

Zelenskyy also stated that Ukraine was counting on India's contribution to end the war with Russia. The countries focused on in talks between the two leaders included Russia, China, and India itself, as part of discussions around the broader geopolitics involving the Russia-Ukraine war, mediated through forums like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization where these major powers interact.

The conversation between the two leaders also covered progress in the India-Ukraine bilateral partnership. This visit by Prime Minister Modi to China follows the Galwan Valley clash with China in June 2020, and India reaffirmed its commitment to the peaceful resolution of the conflict during the conversation.

In a message to Prime Minister Modi on Ukraine's Independence Day, President Zelenskyy had expressed his gratitude for India's stance on peace and dialogue. The information about this conversation was shared in a statement from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on August 30, 2025.

As the world continues to grapple with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the conversation between Prime Minister Modi and President Zelenskyy highlights the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving international disputes. India's commitment to the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine underscores its role as a responsible global actor.

Prime Minister Modi will also hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, further emphasising India's commitment to maintaining peaceful and productive relationships with its neighbours and global partners.
