India Prepared to Handle Challenges Upon Implementation of Trump's Tariffs
In a recent visit to the UAE, India's Telecommunications Minister, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia (BJP), addressed several pressing issues.
Mr Scindia confirmed that power cuts have been experienced within India but assured that services are gradually returning to normal. He also mentioned that systems are up and running within the country. This statement comes after a disruption to internet services in India, caused by severed cables in the Red Sea. Repair work is currently ongoing to restore communication.
On the international front, Mr Scindia emphasised India's valued relationships with countries across the world, including the US. However, he did not shy away from expressing India's disapproval of recent tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. The tariffs, among the steepest charges on a US trading partner, have doubled the duty rate to 50% on Indian imports. New Delhi has called these tariffs "unfair" and "unjustified".
Despite these challenges, Mr Scindia reiterated India's capability to handle any challenge. He mentioned the deployment of ships and repair ships across all coasts to address the current issue. This resilience is a reflection of the Prime Minister's agenda of atmanirbharta (self-reliance).
India's economic strength was also highlighted in Mr Scindia's statements. The country is the fourth-largest economy in the world, with a GDP greater than $4 trillion. In the last quarter, India's GDP growth rate was 7.8%, and it remains upward of 6.5% on an annual basis.
India has maintained that its oil imports are to ensure energy security for its 1.4 billion people. The tariffs imposed by the US on Indian imports are due to India's continued purchase of Russian oil. However, Mr Scindia did not believe the disruption will cause critical damage at this point in time.
In conclusion, despite facing power cuts and increased tariffs, India remains resilient and focused on its economic growth. The country continues to value its international relationships while standing firm on its decisions for energy security.
