India potentially facing a competitor in the gaming sector with Sri Lanka, as per Melco Resorts chairman's observations.

In the heart of Colombo, Sri Lanka's capital city, a new era of luxury tourism is unfolding. The much-anticipated launch of the City of Dreams Sri Lanka, a $1.2 billion integrated resort, marks a significant milestone in the country's tourism industry.

This ambitious project, a joint venture between Melco and John Keells Holdings, is South Asia’s first fully integrated luxury resort. Spanning over 800 rooms, the complex includes a 687-room Cinnamon Life hotel and a 113-room ultra-luxury Nüwa hotel, a world-class casino, upscale retail, and extensive MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) facilities.

The resort, which opened on August 2, is expected to generate a significant multiplier effect for the Sri Lankan economy, creating thousands of jobs in construction, retail, technology, hospitality, and FDI. Krishna Balendra, Chairperson of the John Keels Group, believes the project will boost the country's GDP and position Colombo as a regional and global hub.

The City of Dreams Sri Lanka is designed to draw affluent tourists from India, the Middle East, Russia, and China. Balendra stated that the resort was developed despite the challenges posed by the Easter bombings, the pandemic, and the economic crisis. Lawrence Ho, chairman of Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd., shares this optimism, believing Sri Lanka has the potential to become for India what Macau is to China.

The entry of globally recognized luxury hotel brands such as Ritz-Carlton Reserve into Sri Lanka further underscores the country's growing appeal. With a project comprising 73 villas and 80 branded residences, Ritz-Carlton is catering to high-net-worth individuals and is expected to attract wealthy tourists from India and the Middle East who seek exclusivity and privacy.

Sri Lanka’s strategic location and emerging ultra-luxury hospitality ecosystem, combined with new global luxury brands and integrated resort experiences, signal a strong potential to attract high-spending tourists from India, the Middle East, and other countries seeking premium leisure, entertainment, and investment opportunities.

The launch event for the City of Dreams Sri Lanka includes a star-studded event with Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan performing. Ho, who first visited Colombo in 2013 and saw renderings of the City of Dreams Sri Lanka project, is equally enthusiastic about the project and believes it will be a defining moment for Sri Lanka.

The City of Dreams Sri Lanka project, conceived in 2010 as Sri Lanka emerged from a 25-year civil war, is the most ambitious for the John Keels Group. The formal legal framework for gaming, introduced in 2023, enabled Melco to enter the Sri Lankan market with a 20-year license to operate adult gaming facilities within the resort.

In conclusion, the launch of the City of Dreams Sri Lanka and the entry of luxury hotel brands like Ritz-Carlton Reserve into Sri Lanka's ultra-luxury tourism market are signs of a promising future for the country's luxury tourism sector. With infrastructure and brand appeal likely to stimulate growth in affluent tourist arrivals and associated luxury property investments from key international source markets, Sri Lanka is poised to become a leading destination for luxury travel and investment in the region.
