- Independent governance of Saxony-Anhalt sought by AfD candidate Siegmund
Saxony-Anhalt, a central German state, is gearing up for its Landtagswahl (state election) in September 2026. The current Minister-President, Reiner Haseloff (CDU), has announced he will not run in the next election.
The AfD, under the leadership of Ulrich Siegmund, is currently leading in the polls with 39 percent of the support. Siegmund, the leading AfD candidate, has announced plans to tighten migration policy if elected. He has defended the term "Remigration," stating it is a "completely normal, positive word" that means "a departure from the previous irregular and illegal immigration."
If elected, Siegmund plans to immediately change the state's migration policy. He proposes a shift from cash payments to a system similar to the "Lastenausgleich" (burden-sharing compensation). However, specific detailed plans on this shift are not explicitly confirmed in the available sources. The AfD's proposed policy would be accompanied by a deportation offensive and the central and secure accommodation of all refugees.
The AfD in Saxony-Anhalt also plans to cancel the state broadcasting treaty as soon as possible and withdraw the state from public broadcasting.
The CDU, currently trailing behind the AfD with 27 percent, has chosen Economics Minister and state leader Schulze as its candidate for the Landtagswahl. Almost half of the respondents (47 percent) prefer a state government led by the CDU as before. More than a third (37 percent) would like an AfD government.
The CDU, under Haseloff's leadership, currently governs the state with a coalition of CDU, SPD, and FDP. If the AfD wins, it could mark a significant shift in the political landscape of Saxony-Anhalt. The election in September 2026 promises to be a closely watched event.
