Increased Road Safety Measures at Carl-Schurz Primary School in Tannenbusch: Pupils Distributing Lemons as Response to Speeding Offenses
On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, the Bonn Police led a traffic safety action at the Carl-Schurz Elementary School in Tannenbusch. The campaign, named "Thank You and Think Twice", was aimed at raising awareness about traffic safety and encouraging drivers to adhere to speed limits.
The Traffic Accident Prevention unit of the Bonn Police took the lead in organising the event. Alongside the Bonn police and the traffic service, employees from the fire department and the local school administration participated in the action. Colleagues from the Traffic Service and the responsible district officer also lent their support.
The students from the Carl-Schurz Elementary School played an active role in the campaign. They acted as police officers and conducted "traffic didactic conversations" with drivers, discussing the importance of adhering to speed limits and following traffic rules.
Drivers who obeyed the speed limits were rewarded with handmade thank-you notes from the children, expressing gratitude for their adherence to traffic regulations. However, those who violated speed limits received lemons, symbolising a reminder of the need to slow down. The lemons came with a message "I'm upset that you're speeding here!".
Police Chief Commissioner Dawn McBean, head of Traffic Accident Prevention at the Bonn Police, expressed her gratitude to the Carl-Schurz Elementary School and the participating children. She declared the action a success, praising the children's active involvement and the positive impact it had on the community.
Speed measurements were conducted on the Waldenburger Ring, in front of the school, to monitor the effectiveness of the campaign. The "Thank You and Think Twice" campaign was a unique initiative that brought together the community, school, and law enforcement to promote traffic safety and create a safer environment for children.
