Increase in Cashew Exports to China Outpaces U.S., Making China Vietnam's Prime Cashew Market

In the first seven months of 2025, Vietnam's cashew exports have experienced a notable shift, with China emerging as the country's largest export market.

According to recent data, Vietnam exported 96,000 tonnes of cashews to China, marking a significant increase of 29% in volume and 47% in value compared to the same period in 2024. This surge in exports can be attributed to an economic rebound, a stronger appetite for healthy snacks, and better adaptation by Vietnamese exporters and manufacturers to China's requirements.

On the other hand, cashew exports to the US, a market that had been Vietnam's top buyer for over a decade, have seen a decline. The volume of exports decreased by nearly 28%, and the value dropped by 12% in the seven-month period of 2025. This downturn can be linked to higher tariffs affecting demand and the US market's stronger demand for processed cashew products.

The 20% retaliatory tariff, imposed by the US, has been a significant factor in this decrease. However, the US imports of processed Vietnamese cashew products in the first half of 2025 showed a slight increase. Imports reached nearly 28,000 tonnes worth $214 million, up 33% in volume and 53% in value compared to the same period in 2024.

Vietnam's cashews are present in more than 90 countries and territories, with over 300,000ha of cashew growing areas spread across more than 20 provinces and cities. Bình Phước Province, in particular, is home to a majority of these cashew growing areas, with 150,000ha.

In response to the changing market dynamics, Vietnamese exporters and manufacturers have implemented strategic measures such as improving processing technology, enhancing quality standards, expanding direct trade relationships, and participating in international trade fairs to increase market share.

Despite the shift in the cashew export market, China is projected to remain the key market for Vietnamese cashews for the rest of 2025. The Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional Chinese holiday, has led to an increase in cashew purchases from China, further solidifying China's position as a significant player in the Vietnamese cashew export market.

The total cashew export revenue for the seven-month period of 2025 was $2.8 billion, demonstrating the continued importance of the cashew industry to Vietnam's economy. As the industry adapts to changing market conditions, it is expected to continue to play a vital role in Vietnam's economic growth.
