Inadequate taxi services spanning over five decades in Gibraltar
In the picturesque city of Gibraltar, a significant change is underway in the transportation sector. The Gibraltar Taxi Association (GTA) has taken the initiative to establish a meet and greet service at the airport, aiming to enhance the visitor experience.
The GTA's latest project, if it proceeds, may receive a boost from the Government, which is considering providing loans to support taxi drivers in purchasing these new vehicles. This move is part of an effort to modernise the taxi fleet and promote sustainable transportation.
The Government's interest in this venture is not new. Back in 2013, they loaned £300,000 (€345,000) to the GTA for the installation of meters in taxis. This time, the focus is on hybrid taxis, which combine electric power with a small combustion engine for additional power.
Trials of these new hybrid taxis, resembling the iconic London black cabs, have already been conducted in Gibraltar. The company leading these preparatory trials is Gedime Motors Gibraltar, in collaboration with the GTA.
It's important to note that these new hybrid taxis will not carry as many passengers as the larger, favoured local minibuses. However, they are expected to offer a high-quality service and reasonable prices, thanks to the enforcement of the 2017 Taxi Charter. This charter aims to ensure a good quality service and reasonable prices in the taxi sector.
As Gibraltar continues to evolve, these new hybrid taxis mark a significant step towards a more sustainable and modern transportation system. The Government's support and the GTA's initiatives are paving the way for a greener, more efficient future for Gibraltar's taxis.
