In the return of the derby, St Pauli triumphed over Hamburg.
In a thrilling clash between two historic German football clubs, FC St. Pauli emerged victorious against Hamburg in a match played on a date in 2025. The atmosphere was electric before the match, with Hamburg celebrating their first home Bundesliga match in seven years. However, the night belonged to St. Pauli.
The visitors took an early lead when Adam Dzwigala scored from a clever short corner on the 19-minute mark. The goal was a testament to St. Pauli's tactical prowess and their ability to capitalise on opportunities.
In the second half, St. Pauli extended their lead thanks to Andreas Hountondji. Heuer Fernandes, the Hamburg 'keeper, allowed Hountondji to round him and score from a narrow angle on the counter-attack with 60 minutes played.
Hamburg's slim hopes of a comeback were quashed when defender Giorgi Gocholeishvili was sent off with 13 minutes remaining, following a second yellow card. The rest of the match saw Hamburg struggling to create chances, with St. Pauli looking more comfortable at this level.
Hamburg captain Yussuf Poulsen admitted that they couldn't make things work during the match. The loss leaves Hamburg in a precarious position, with relegation a real possibility if they fail to improve significantly.
St. Pauli, on the other hand, continue their impressive form against Hamburg in the top flight, having yet to lose to them since 2002. Defender Louis Oppie, who joined St. Pauli from Arminia Bielefeld, praised his teammates for their performance.
Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund will host Union Berlin on Sunday, while Bayern Munich will play away at Bavarian neighbours Augsburg on Saturday.
Despite the victory, St. Pauli remains in the 2. Bundesliga, a league they have been in for a season longer than Hamburg. They will be hoping to secure promotion and rekindle the fierce rivalry between the two clubs in the top flight.
