In Lithuania, the importance of financial know-how for contemporary lawyers: A look at the intertwining of law and finance

In the rapidly evolving world of finance, the demand for professionals with a deep understanding of regulatory frameworks, particularly the DORA regulation (Digital Operational Resilience in the Financial Sector), is on the rise. This is according to experts in the field.

To address this growing need, the Leuphana Professional School has launched a new part-time Master's program in Corporate & Business Law (LL.M.). This innovative program aims to prepare graduates to ensure compliance of financial institutions and address challenges beyond typical operational risks, money laundering, or data protection.

The curriculum focuses on emerging financial services, the challenges they present, and the impact of technological advancements, particularly AI, on legal compliance. One of the most-sought-after competencies by employers is the ability to understand how financial technology works and what risks, like cybersecurity, are involved.

In addition to legal and financial knowledge, soft skills are equally important for a job at institutions like the EPPO, European Commission, or European Court of Justice. A successful legal career today requires a synthesis of law, finance, technology, and soft skills like critical thinking and adaptability.

Aurelia Mari, a senior financial investigator at the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) and VMU visiting lecturer, advises aspiring professionals to be curious and open to the world for a career in EU institutions. She believes that lawyers must not be afraid of making mistakes and should be able to take responsibility.

Meanwhile, Veronika Matiušovaitė, a fifth-year law student at VMU, agrees that critical thinking and analytical skills are some of the most vital qualities for a modern lawyer. She emphasises the importance of human interaction, especially when collaborating with colleagues from different countries and cultures.

Aspiring professionals should seek out internship opportunities and hone foreign language skills to open up greater career opportunities. The VMU Faculty of Law has launched a Master's degree program in Financial Law, combining legal and financial knowledge.

The greatest demand is for professionals who can develop systems, manage risks, and make decisions, not just for those capable of routine tasks. Lawyers with interdisciplinary knowledge, including expertise in technology and risk management, are guaranteed a wealth of opportunities in the rapidly growing financial sector.

By embracing this interdisciplinary approach, aspiring lawyers can unlock a wealth of career opportunities in Lithuania and across Europe. The shortage of compliance specialists for financial institutions in Lithuania underscores the need for such programs. With the right skills and mindset, a career in this field promises a rewarding and challenging journey.
