German authorities have imposed a ban on Apple from promoting the Apple Watch as climate neutral in their advertising campaigns.

In Germany, the promotion of Apple Watch as climate-neutral is now forbidden for Apple.

In a significant ruling, the Frankfurt Regional Court has prohibited tech giant Apple from promoting its Apple Watch as climate-neutral in Germany. The court's decision comes after the German Environmental Aid (DUH) challenged Apple's claims, claiming that the company misled consumers by marketing the Apple Watch as a climate-neutral product.

Two years ago, the Apple Watch was designated as one of Apple's first climate-neutral devices. However, the DUH argued that Apple's use of commercially cultivated and short-term Eucalyptus tree cultures did not ensure CO2 neutrality.

The court ruling is considered a win against controversial "greenwashing" practices by the DUH. The court agreed with the DUH that Apple's marketing of the Apple Watch as climate-neutral was deceptive.

Despite this setback, Apple aims to offer all its products as climate-neutral by 2030. The company has taken steps towards this goal, with the Apple Watch's production using 30% recycled material and half of the watches being shipped without using airplanes. These measures have resulted in a 75% reduction in CO2 emissions during the manufacturing of the Apple Watch.

The remaining 25% emissions from the Apple Watch's manufacturing are offset by "high-quality carbon credits." Apple plans to abandon the climate-neutral labeling of its Apple Watches to comply with upcoming EU legislation.

The court's ruling against Apple's climate-neutral marketing of the Apple Watch is significant in the context of "greenwashing" practices. It serves as a reminder for companies to be transparent and accurate in their environmental claims. The DUH, which successfully challenged Apple's claims in court, continues to demand responsibilities for the use of environmentally sustainable practices in the tech industry.
