In a step-by-step progression, from dental pieces to spacecraft, the question arises, where does this escalate next?
In the community of Jesus, reconciliation is a cherished value. Yet, in the turbulent landscape of the Middle East, the region is marred by conflicts involving various militias from Yemen and the Mullah regime in Iran, who engage in aggression, using missiles, drones, and other weapons.
These conflicts, reported by news agencies for over a year, have resulted in the loss of innocent lives, including women and children. The Holy Scriptures underscore the futility of war and conflict, as they bring nothing but suffering, destruction, and despair.
Evangelical Focus, with a mission across Europe and beyond, is committed to addressing this sustainability challenge. They advocate for the inclusion of God in the resolution of conflicts, as the exclusion of God from our lives can lead to an escalation of violence.
Professor Johannes Reimer, a scholar of Mission Studies at the University of South Africa, echoes this sentiment. He emphasizes that Jesus' church, called to transform the culture and living space of the world in the spirit of the kingdom of God, is responsible for the world and is the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
Jesus Christ's teachings underscore forgiveness and turning the other cheek rather than endorsing the principle of Talion (eye for an eye). He would not legitimize revenge as justified by parties in Middle East conflicts. However, the current conflicts in the region are not instances of the Old Testament principle of retribution, as they involve strategic warfare to gain power and not equal retribution.
Paul, in his writings, agrees with Jesus, stating that vengeance and retribution should be left to God. Karl Barth, a renowned theologian, believes that God is in control of the world. Yet, the choice between peace negotiations and war with suffering without end lies with humans.
The world is dark, but there is hope in Jesus Christ. As He stated in Matthew 5:39, people should not resist those who harm them, but should turn the other cheek instead. This message of peace and reconciliation is a beacon of hope amidst the turmoil of the Middle East.
