Impaired Driving Due to Medication: A Political Issue
In two separate incidents on June 30, 2025, the police in Bad Salzdetfurth and Bockenem, Germany, identified two drivers suspected of being under the influence of drugs.
In Bad Salzdetfurth, a driver operating a "Simson" moped in Martin-Luther-Straße, 31167 Bockenem, showed signs of amphetamine use during a routine sobriety check. The second driver disregarded a police stop sign in Bad Salzdetfurth at 01:25 AM and was eventually stopped during a pursuit in the same town.
Both drivers were subsequently subjected to blood tests, and criminal proceedings were initiated against them under § 316 StGB ("driving under the influence"). The results of the blood tests for both drivers are still pending.
The first driver is believed to have consumed an amphetamine-containing medication prescribed by a doctor earlier. These medications can impair physical and mental performance, even with a prescription, making it unsafe to drive. The second driver's case involves a more complex set of circumstances, and further details can be found elsewhere.
The Bad Salzdetfurth police caution about the risks of taking centrally acting medications, such as antidepressants, painkillers, or ADHD medications, while driving. If you experience side effects like dizziness or double vision while driving, you could endanger yourself and other road users. Regular check-ups with a doctor and self-assessment are recommended to ensure safety while driving.
Inquiries regarding these incidents can be directed to the Police Station Hildesheim or the Police Department Bad Salzdetfurth. The officers who solved the two cases of suspected drug impairment on June 30, 2025, in Bad Salzdetfurth and Bockenem have not been publicly named.
The investigations regarding both drivers are ongoing. The public is reminded to drive responsibly and to avoid operating a vehicle while under the influence of any substance that may impair their ability to drive safely.
