Impact of Candle Use on Health and Selecting Safer Candle Options

In the comfort of our homes, scented candles have been a popular choice for creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere. However, recent studies have shed light on potential health risks associated with these candles, particularly those made from paraffin wax.

Firstly, it's crucial to ensure the safety of children and pets around burning candles. Keep them away from open flames to prevent accidents and potential harm.

When burned, scented candles can release several harmful gases into the air. These include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, formaldehyde, and cancer-causing hydrocarbons such as naphthalene and pyrene. These substances can irritate the eyes, throat, and nose, and in extreme cases, cause nausea and difficulty breathing.

Moreover, scented candles can also release phthalates, chemicals often used to increase the candles' fragrance strength. Once phthalates enter the bloodstream, they can worsen allergy and asthma symptoms and alter hormone levels.

To minimise these risks, it's recommended to air the room after burning a candle to help reduce the concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air. Regularly trimming the wick of the candle and choosing candles made from natural materials, such as beeswax and soy wax, can also help reduce the release of potentially harmful gases.

Interestingly, scented candles that use essential oils instead of synthetic perfumes may be less likely to release harmful substances into the air. However, it's important to note that some essential oils, such as cinnamon, tea tree, sage, and eucalyptus, can be harmful to pets and should be avoided in scented candles.

Lastly, it's essential to handle candles with care. If the flame becomes too high and starts to soot, put out the candle. Instead of blowing out the flame, smother it using a candle snuffer or a metal spoon handle.

By being aware of these risks and taking simple precautions, we can continue to enjoy the ambience of scented candles while ensuring a safer and healthier home environment for ourselves and our loved ones.
