In the United States, nearly everyone, excluding 3.7 million Native Americans, can trace their roots to foreign lands. This diversity has been a defining characteristic of the nation, enriching its culture and driving its progress. However, during President Donald Trump's second tenure, the administration took steps to control both legal and illegal immigration, tightening visa durations for students, cultural exchange visitors, and members of the media as part of a broader crackdown on legal immigration.

This policy, often criticised as anti-immigrant, has raised concerns about its potential impact on the future of the United States. If the anti-immigrant policy had been adopted eight decades ago, it would have denied citizenship to notable figures like Elon Musk (Tesla), Sergey Brin (Google), Jensen Huang (NVIDIA), Pierre Omidyar (eBay), George Soros (Soros Fund Management), Vinod Khosla (Sun Microsystems), Jan Koum (WhatsApp), Max Levchin (PayPal), and many others.

In 2024, 20% of the American super-rich were the children of immigrant parents who were not American by birth. Similarly, 15% of the top 100 US entrepreneurs were born in foreign lands. A closed America could potentially end the proverbial American dream for tens of thousands of aspirational Indian youth in the short run.

However, in the long run, a closed America could benefit India by halting the brain drain and compelling the country to reform and prosper. Roughly one-third of American Nobel laureates have been immigrants, a testament to the historical contributions of immigrants to the United States.

It is essential to remember that the United States was founded and enriched by immigrants and their descendants. The Trump administration's anti-immigrant policy should be mindful of this historical contribution. Any steps to stop the entry of immigrants for the sake of populist votes would adversely impact the United States in the long run.

The Trump administration's immigration policies are driven by a nativist agenda, which overlooks the fact that the United States has the sovereign right to determine the entry of foreign nationals onto its soil. However, this right should be exercised with caution, considering the potential benefits that immigrants bring to the nation.

Immigrants have sustained the glory of America for several generations, and their continued contribution is crucial for the nation's future prosperity. The United States, as a land of opportunity, should remain open to those who seek a better life, fostering a vibrant and diverse society that is the envy of the world.
