Immediate Call for a Complete and Unconditional Ceasefire: UK's Plea at the UN Security Council, Following Zelenskyy's Repeated Actions, with Putin in Focus
In a united front, 14 members of the United Nations Security Council, including the Prime Minister of Ukraine, have called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Ukraine. This plea comes after Russia's largest aerial attack of the war on September 1, 2022, which resulted in the tragic loss of at least 23 lives, including four innocent children, and left many more injured.
The speaker, whose identity was not disclosed, was joined by 13 of their fellow Council members in delivering statements about Russia's violence. They accused the Russian government of being hell-bent on destroying Ukraine and sabotaging international peace efforts. The attack, which hit civilians and civilian infrastructure, including the British Council and the EU Delegation in Kyiv, was a deliberate violation of international humanitarian law.
The Russian government is under fire for deploying nearly 600 drones and 31 missiles in the attack. The speaker implied that President Putin had the power to prevent this invasion, questioning how many lives could have been saved if he had chosen peace and diplomacy instead of violence. The speaker also noted that President Putin had the power to stop the war multiple times, including in February 2022.
The Ukrainian government held the Russian government responsible for these attacks, which caused civilian and infrastructure damage. The youngest victim was a 2-year-old child. The Kremlin's actions have inflicted significant suffering on civilians, including a guard at the British Council office who was injured and hospitalized.
ASG Jenca briefed the group this afternoon on the situation in Ukraine. The Prime Minister of Ukraine is expected to participate in today's meeting. The President thanked Greece for its stewardship of the Council in August.
The Prime Minister has also stated that the bloodshed in Ukraine must end. The international community continues to stand with Ukraine in its pursuit of peace and justice.
