IMF examining disbursement of $600 million as second instalment for Ghana's loan on upcoming Friday
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is set to review Ghana's $600 million second loan payout on Friday, paving the way for the much-anticipated disbursement. This payment is part of a $3 billion extended credit facility (ECF) arrangement approved by the IMF in May 2023.
The ECF was designed to assist Ghana with its Post-COVID-19 Program for Economic Growth, aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability in the country. The first tranche of $600 million was disbursed by the IMF in May 2023.
Meanwhile, Ghana has reached a deal to restructure $5.4 billion of its official creditor debt. However, it's important to note that the debt restructuring was not part of the current review.
The IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, is expected to make a statement during the review of Ghana's loan payout. It's worth mentioning that the approval for a meeting is expected to be granted once the date for a meeting has been set.
Once the second tranche is signed off, it will trigger $550 million in additional World Bank funding. This funding is a significant boost for Ghana's economic recovery efforts.
The $3 billion loan was secured by Ghana in 2023, and the loan payout being reviewed is the second one from this loan. The IMF's involvement in approving the second payment tranche is a testament to its commitment to supporting Ghana's economic growth and stability.
The extended credit facility arrangement with Ghana is expected to span over three years, providing Ghana with much-needed financial support during this critical period. The successful review and disbursement of the second tranche payment are significant steps towards Ghana's economic recovery and growth.
