BMW Announces Compact Third-Generation Fuel Cell System for Series Production
BMW Group is set to revolutionize the automotive industry with its third-generation hydrogen fuel cell system, scheduled for series production starting in 2028. This system, designed for zero-emission, high-performance drive, will fit seamlessly into the vehicle, thanks to its compact layout.
The fuel cell system, a key component of BMW's technology-open product portfolio, consists of the fuel cells and all necessary components for their operation, including cooling, hydrogen, and air subsystems. This technology is a joint development effort between BMW and Toyota Motor Corporation.
The new fuel cell system operates with greater efficiency than its predecessor, due to upgraded components and improved operating strategies. Prototypes of this system are being developed at BMW's competence centers in Munich and Steyr, with additional components sourced from BMW's technology hub in Landshut.
Series production of the fuel cell systems will begin in 2028 at BMW Group Plant Steyr. The launch of the first-ever fuel cell production model from BMW will add another exceptionally efficient high-performance drive system with zero emissions to the technology-open product portfolio.
BMW's aim for a technology-open product portfolio is to include a variety of zero-emission, high-performance drive systems, paving the way for a flexible and adaptable approach to future vehicle architectures. The compact design of the third-generation fuel cell system allows for its integration into these future vehicle architectures.
This announcement marks a significant step forward in BMW's commitment to sustainable mobility and zero-emission technology. With the third-generation fuel cell system, BMW is poised to offer customers an efficient, high-performance, and environmentally friendly driving experience.
