In the early hours of September 1st, the Bremerhaven Police pursued two high-performance vehicles, a VW Phaeton and a Mercedes E-model, for alleged illegal street racing on Langener Landstraße.

The incident occurred around 1:15 AM, moving in a northerly direction towards Cherbourger Straße. The cars were moving side by side with a few meters distance between them, suggesting a race.

Illegal street racing is a criminal offense in Bremerhaven, punishable by severe penalties according to the Criminal Code (§315d). Participating in a single-car speed race through the city is considered a race under the law.

The police seized both vehicles as evidence after finding that their engines and brakes were overheated. The seized vehicles were towed away following the incident. Both drivers had to surrender their driver's licenses following the incident.

It is important to note that the legislature considers any speeding and reckless driving as a potential illegal street race. In case of personal injury, a prison sentence of up to ten years can be imposed for illegal street racing. If a race results in endangerment of other road users, a prison sentence of up to five years may be imposed.
