iDEA Releases Code of Conduct for Responsible Advertising in iGaming and Online Betting Industry
iDEA Growth, the trade association championing online gaming and sports betting companies in the burgeoning regulated gambling market in the U.S., has taken a significant step forward by adopting a new responsible advertising code for sports betting and online gambling.
This move comes as the Association acknowledges the influence of gambling advertising within regulated jurisdictions, highlighting how it fosters competitive played fields and offers diverse choices for customers. At the same time, iDEA emphasizes the importance of responsible advertising practices in supporting responsible gambling initiatives.
The Association's members, therefore, pledge allegiance to the Responsible Advertising Code, replete with various guidelines. Among these principles is the active monitoring of ad compliance and the promotion of responsible gambling. Furthermore, members must restrain from college and university advertising, comply with local iGaming and sports betting regulations, and cater to mature audiences only. Typically, the legal age limit is 21 years, although this can vary by state laws allowing 18-year-olds to gamble.
iDEA's Responsible Advertising Code was conceived by the Association's Responsible Advertising Committee. The Code will be re-evaluated annually and updated if required.
Protecting Vulnerable Populations
To shed more light on the Code, Howard Glaser, iDEA's executive Board Member and Light & Wonder's global head of government affairs and legislative counsel, explained that the online gambling and betting sector abides by a stringent set of rules. He pointed out that responsible gambling advertising is a fundamental aspect of these regulations. Glaser further stressed that iDEA and its members, in embracing responsible advertising and ethical business practices, value both customer wellbeing and ethical conduct.
Responsible advertising practices act as a shield for online sports betting and iGaming consumers by ensuring that advertisements do not prey upon or tempt vulnerable groups, including minors and those battling addiction.
Jim Ryan, Boyd Interactive's CEO and iDEA's executive Board Member, expanded upon this, stating that responsible gambling advertising serves to safeguard vulnerable populations like minors and gambling addicts. The adoption of the Responsible Gambling Code by iDEA members demonstrates their commitment to best practices and fostering safe and accountable gaming activities.
key principles of the Responsible Advertising Code, like transparency, data privacy, fair treatment, compliance with regulations, and ethical communication, can often be found in responsible advertising in sectors like online gambling.
