Unfortunately, his bid for the Hall of Fame faced a setback in 2011 when he failed to get the 5 percent necessary to remain on the ballot another year, with just 4.6 percent of the vote. However, like Ichiro, he will have another chance thanks to the veteran's committee.
Meanwhile, Billy Wagner, another legendary player, has waited 10 years on the ballot for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Wagner, who is the first left-handed reliever to be inducted, finished his career with 422 saves, second only to John Franco among lefty closers. Wagner's emotional response to his induction was one of overwhelming gratitude, as he expressed that it's a privilege to represent a lot.
Wagner's induction may open the doors for other left-handed relievers, but it's also significant for small colleges. Wagner represents Virginia and small colleges, having played at Division III Ferrum College.
Another notable inductee this year is Curt Schilling, who was on the 2011 Baseball Hall of Fame ballot but received insufficient votes to remain on the ballot the following year. However, he was eventually elected by the Veterans Committee before being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
John Franco, another ex-Met, also had to rely on the veteran's committee to get inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Franco, who has 424 saves, is the only other ex-Met to have more saves than Billy Wagner.
