I experimented with Matt Fitzpatrick's cross-handed chipping method... Did it boost my short game performance?

In the world of golf, constant improvement is the key to success. Recently, a golfer decided to try a new technique to enhance their short game – the cross-handed chipping. This method, which involves placing the left-hand below the right for right-handed golfers, was attempted during a round of golf.

Initially, the golfer felt a bit nervous over the ball, a common feeling when trying something new. However, after getting the hang of it and seeing some positive results, they realised that more practice was needed to master this technique.

The golfer shared their experience, along with an expert guide, in an article and video. Ben Emerson, a Golf Monthly Top 50 Coach with a modern approach to the game, was the expert they consulted. Emerson, who has been coaching golfers for over 20 years, has helped golfers of all ages and abilities to improve their performances. He is also known for having celebrity clients on his books.

The cross-handed chipping technique helps to square the shoulders and remove some of the wrist action that might be causing problems in your short game. The perfect ball position for this technique is forward of centre, with weight distribution favouring the lead side throughout the swing. There should be around 10 degrees of forward shaft lean.

The hands can be interlocked or overlapped in the cross-handed chipping technique, or they can sit one below the other, like in the left-hand low putting grip. The technique requires just a few subtle changes to the traditional method of chipping.

Interestingly, Matt Fitzpatrick, the 2022 US Open Champion, is also known to use this technique. During this week's Open Championship at Royal Portrush, Fitzpatrick led the field for Strokes Gained: Around The Green. The author, in fact, made an uncharacteristic par putt after a good shot into the 5th hole, which could be a testament to the effectiveness of the cross-handed chipping technique.

Despite the promising results, the search results do not contain information about which golf teacher made his expertise on cross-stepping chipping to try this technique for himself. Nevertheless, the cross-handed chipping technique offers a fresh perspective for golfers seeking to improve their short game.
