In a significant move towards a sustainable future, Hyundai has unveiled the Hyundai Blue, a full working hydrogen fuel cell car, at the International Motor Show (IAA) 2025 in Munich. The Hyundai Blue, named after Hyundai's eco range and the symbol for hydrogen (H2), marks a shift in Hyundai's focus from electric vehicles (EVs) to hybrids and hydrogen fuel cells.

Hyundai's partnership with the VW Group and Kia is at the forefront of this hydrogen future for cars. The collaboration aims to share hydrogen fuel cell technology and develop a hydrogen-powered automotive industry. Audi, as a lead partner, joins Hyundai in this venture, underscoring the commitment to a cleaner and more efficient future.

The Hyundai Blue, designed for efficiency, boasts an electric motor and a hydrogen fuel stack that provides 90kW of power. This innovative vehicle offers impressive fuel economy, with 100mpg and 121bhp. The interior is adorned with eco-friendly materials, driver recognition systems, a transparent LED monitor, and a mouse for controlling the Infotainment.

The design of the Hyundai Blue saloon may hint at future design directions at Hyundai, signalling a commitment to sustainable and innovative design.

Meanwhile, General Motors (GM) has also made a statement with the Chevrolet Mi-ray Concept, debuted at the Seoul Motor Show. This concept car features two electric motors and a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine. Although it does not rely solely on hydrogen fuel cells like the Hyundai Blue, the Mi-ray Concept showcases GM's commitment to hybrid technology.

In South Korea, GM ranks behind indigenous makers Kia and Hyundai, but the reveal of the Chevrolet Mi-ray Concept underscores GM's ambition to compete in the rapidly evolving market for sustainable vehicles.

Hyundai, with its focus on hydrogen fuel cell technology, maintains that this is the future for electric cars. The Hyundai-Kia and Volkswagen Group partnership is a significant step towards realising this vision, promising a cleaner, more efficient, and more sustainable future for the automotive industry.
