Hyundai's Compact Ioniq Model May Prove to be an Unanticipated Game-Changer

Hyundai is set to make a splash at the IAA Mobility Show 2025 in Munich, Germany, with the unveiling of a new electric concept vehicle on September 9. This upcoming EV is expected to evolve into a production subcompact model, serving as a zero-emission alternative to the ICE-powered i20 supermini and Bayon crossover.

The new EV is rumoured to bear the Ioniq 2 moniker, making it the smallest member of the Ioniq family. The concept version of this vehicle, recently spotted by spy photographers, shares a similar shape with the teaser images released by Hyundai.

The design of the new electric concept appears to include full-width LED bars for the headlights and taillights, much like the Ioniq 6 sedan. The EV adopts a chunky fastback/hatchback silhouette with an integrated ducktail spoiler, giving it a unique and dynamic look.

While no details about the powertrain have been disclosed, it is expected that the production version of the upcoming Hyundai EV will share the E-GMP architecture with the Kia EV2 and EV3 crossovers. The EV could be powered by a single electric motor with 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS).

The battery pack might have a capacity of 58.3 kWh, providing a decent range for daily commutes and city driving. The upcoming Hyundai EV is expected to have a unique bodykit and different wheels compared to the concept, further setting it apart from its predecessors.

The new EV is expected to compete with Kia's smallest EV, which could become one of its most thrilling performance models. It will also face competition from other electric subcompact hatchbacks such as the Renault 5 E-Tech, Nissan Micra, Peugeot E-208, Opel Corsa Electric, Citroen e-C3, and BYD Dolphin.

Hyundai has not yet revealed the name of the designer responsible for the design of this exciting new electric concept. The new EV is expected to hit the market in the first half of 2026, marking a significant step forward in Hyundai's electrification strategy.
