Hyundai's Australian N Performance division to introduce high-performance hybrid models in the near future.
Hyundai Australia's new chief, Don Romano, has highlighted the N Performance division as a key focus for the company's growth in the Australian market. In an interview, Romano expressed his desire to expand the N sub-brand, simply stating "bigger" when asked about his plans for the brand.
One of the first steps in this expansion is the introduction of the first N hybrid model, the new Hyundai Tucson N. This SUV is expected to feature a next-generation 1.6-litre petrol-electric hybrid powertrain, delivering a total of 225kW. The Tucson N is set to become available soon as part of Hyundai's upcoming lineup.
The powertrain is likely to filter down the product lineup, potentially with different tunes, to the Kona N, i30 N, and possibly the i20 N. Currently, the i30 N generates 206kW from its 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.
Hyundai Australia also emphasises the importance of hybrid vehicles, and the N Performance department plans to continue with hybrid powertrains. The spectrum of vehicles will range from small to medium, indicating a diverse range of N-branded hybrid and electrified models in the future.
In addition to hybrid models, Hyundai has already entered the electric vehicle (EV) space with the Ioniq 5 N and Ioniq 6 N. Rumours suggest a cheaper, electric performance car could be the division's next output.
While the specific details about these successors cannot be shared yet, it is confirmed that replacements for the i20N, i30N, and Kona N are in development. Whether these replacements will be ICE, hybrid, or both remains unconfirmed.
Hyundai's commitment to electrified powertrains is evident as they aim to replace their current fleet of vehicles with electrified petrol powertrains. This move aligns with the global trend towards sustainable and efficient mobility solutions.
As Hyundai continues to push the boundaries of performance and technology, the Australian market can look forward to a wider range of high-performance, electrified vehicles from the N Performance division in the near future.
