Hyundai's Next-Gen Tucson: A Radical Redesign on the Horizon

Hyundai Motor Company is gearing up for a significant change in its popular SUV, the Tucson. The next-generation model, internally known as the NX5, is expected to undergo a transformation within the next 12 months.

According to recent reports, the new Tucson will be a hybrid-only affair, offering both hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. This shift marks a departure from the current model, which offers a diesel powertrain option globally. However, some reports suggest that Hyundai may continue with internal combustion power for some time yet, contradicting the hybrid-only affair of the next Tucson.

The design of the next Tucson shares some similarities with Kia's latest design language, as seen on the EV3, EV5, and EV9. The render of the next Tucson, which has been published based on spy pictures, features an upright, squared-off front-end, closed-off grille with an LED light bar, and an open lower grille. Further vertical LED lights flanking the grille give the Tucson a modern look, setting it apart from its predecessor.

The next Tucson also appears to be larger in size compared to the current model, with a more angular, boxy design. The bonnet and front of the next-gen Tucson are more squared-off in the spy pictures.

In terms of technology, the next Tucson is anticipated to have Level 2.5 autonomous driving capability and AI-integrated assistant. Hyundai's new Pleos operating system is expected to debut inside the next Tucson, promising a seamless and intuitive user experience.

There is also talk of a performance-focussed N version of the Tucson in its next generation. Local timing for the next Tucson is unclear but more information should become available next year. The next-gen Hyundai Tucson is being newly developed by Hyundai Motor Company itself and is expected to debut in the third quarter of 2026.
