Hyundai prepares to unveil mini electric Ioniq model in Munich
On September 9, 2025, Hyundai is set to reveal the Ioniq 2 electric concept at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich. The show will run until the 14th.
In the lead-up to the unveiling, Hyundai plans to release two more sets of teasers for the Ioniq 2 concept. The design story of the concept will be gradually revealed through these teasers.
Under the skin, the baby Ioniq is expected to share Hyundai-Kia's E-GMP platform with upcoming Kia EV2 and EV3 crossovers. The production version of the Ioniq 2, anticipated to hit showrooms in the first half of 2026, is expected to feature a 150kW motor and a 58.3kWh battery.
The Ioniq 2 concept boasts a chunky fastback-style silhouette, a ducktail spoiler, flared arches, and an aggressive chin and bumper detailing. The design features full-width LED strips front and rear, resembling the facelifted Ioniq 6.
Spy shots of camouflaged prototypes hint at proportions consistent with the teaser, though the concept may wear show-car bodywork and bespoke wheels. If Hyundai nails the pricing and range, the so-called Ioniq 2 might turn out to be the brand's biggest hit yet.
Reports suggest the production Ioniq 2 will compete with subcompact EVs like the BYD Doplhin. The baby Ioniq is anticipated to slot above the new Inster and offer an all-electric alternative to the i20.
It could launch with a single 150kW motor paired to a 58.3 kWh battery, enough to put it squarely against the BYD Dolphin and MG4. The Ioniq concept is expected to evolve into the production Ioniq 2. Unfortunately, the search results do not provide information about the head of the development department responsible for the design and construction of the smallest Ioniq.
