New Flyer Introduces Extended Range Feature for Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses

New Flyer, a leading manufacturer of transit buses, has unveiled an innovative solution aimed at addressing the operational needs of public transit agencies with longer service routes and harsher climates. The new feature is a hydrogen four-tank-module for its Xcelsior CHARGE FC 40-foot hydrogen fuel cell-electric bus.

The additional four transverse-mounted tanks enable storage for five standard onboard hydrogen tanks, providing roughly 50% additional fuel capacity. This translates to an extended vehicle range of up to 120 miles, ensuring more dependable service for the communities served by transit agencies.

The new module adds 17.5 additional kilograms of onboard fuel capacity, making it suitable for more aggressive duty cycles. The Humboldt Transit Authority in northern California is among the first to deploy the new solution as part of its fleet. The authority has reported that the new feature has exceeded its expectations in terms of fuel economy and range.

New Flyer, in partnership with NFI Group Inc., developed this solution with the goal of creating mobility solutions that work for every community, including rural counties and growing cities. The partnership and the innovation were officially announced on July 17, 2025.

It's worth noting that the extended range feature is not limited to a specific geographical location. This means that transit agencies across North America and beyond can potentially benefit from this innovation. The Humboldt Transit Authority, being the first public transit agency in North America to adopt the extended range feature from New Flyer, is setting a precedent for other agencies to follow.
