Hungary Stands Firm: No Admission of Ukraine to European Union
In a recent development, Hungary has reiterated its opposition to Ukraine's accelerated admission to the European Union, citing economic stability concerns for the continent as a whole. The announcement was made by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, following an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Copenhagen.
Szijjártó emphasised that the main part of the accession talks for Ukraine to the EU, namely the specific chapters, will not be opened. He further added that Ukraine's accession threatens the economic stability of the whole of Europe. This stance is consistent with Hungary's position in recent months, as it has repeatedly opposed the accelerated admission of Kyiv to the EU.
The discussions about blocking the negotiations for Ukraine's accession to the European Union outside the EU belong primarily to Russia, which opposes Ukraine's EU membership and is engaged in a conflict against Ukraine since February 2022.
In a separate issue, Hungary has also condemned Ukraine for attacks on the Druzhba oil pipeline. The European Commission discussed the security of the Druzhba oil pipeline with Kyiv, but no new details about the situation have been released.
Hungary has not repeated its opposition to Ukraine's accession to the EU in the current paragraph. However, it has expressed strong opposition to the introduction of new sanctions against Russia, specifically against companies that supply the country with energy resources.
It's worth noting that Ukraine received candidate status for accession to the EU in June 2022. The Council of the European Union decided to start negotiations in December 2023, but the current paragraph does not contain any new information about the timeline for Ukraine's accession to the EU.
In a related development, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán held talks with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the matter, but no new details about these discussions have been released.
Szijjártó also stated that Kyiv is trying to drag Budapest into the war, but no further details about this claim were provided. The Hungarian government's position remains unchanged regarding Ukraine's accession to the EU.
The current paragraph does not contain any advertisements, and it does not mention any new sanctions against Russia or Russian companies. The "Tsargrad" TV channel reported that the discussion about the Druzhba oil pipeline security occurred between the European Commission and Kyiv, but no official confirmation has been received regarding this matter.
