Hünfeld's Fire Departments Celebrate Growth, New Leadership and a Century of Service
Hünfeld's fire departments have marked a year of strong performance and expansion. At their annual general meeting, officials highlighted key achievements, including a new youth fire chief and major investments in infrastructure. The town's fire service also received a prestigious state honour for its century-long service.
The meeting began with the election of Leon Bayer as the new city youth fire chief. Felix Schiffhauer and Johanna Stallknecht were chosen as his deputies. Mayor Benjamin Tschesnok commended the fire departments for their dedication, particularly in youth engagement. Hünfeld now has the largest youth and children's fire brigades in the district, with 183 members in the youth brigade and 115 in the children's brigades.
In 2025, the departments responded to 336 calls, including 52 false alarms and 44 operations outside town limits. City Fire Inspector André van Gerven stated that Hünfeld's fire service is the most capable in the Fulda district. The team's average age is 37 for men and 30 for women, with 70% of active firefighters under 40. A feasibility study is currently examining plans to modernise the central fire station. Meanwhile, €1.3 million has already been invested in upgrading stations in Michelsrombach and Mackenzell. Additional funds will go toward new vehicles in the coming year. Hesse's Interior Minister, Professor Dr. Roman Poseck, posthumously awarded the Hessian State Honor Plaque to the main fire station for its 100th anniversary. The ceremony recognised a century of service and commitment to public safety.
The annual report showed a clear focus on growth and modernisation. With new leadership in the youth brigades, ongoing infrastructure upgrades, and a strong operational record, Hünfeld's fire service is preparing for future challenges. The department's efforts in training and community outreach remain a priority for the year ahead.
