Hundertwasser Art Exhibition Debuts in Lindau
The city of Lindau am Bodensee is currently hosting an exhibition titled "The Right to Dream," which features works by the renowned Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. This exhibition, a collaboration between the city and the Hundertwasser Non-Profit Foundation Vienna, is on display at the Kunstmuseum Lindau, which was transformed from the former main post office in 2019.
"The Right to Dream" exhibition showcases lesser-known aspects of Hundertwasser's work. One such piece is an aquarelle from 1949, depicting an angler on a quayside wall, completely absorbed as he holds his fishing rod out over the blue water. Other works on display include drawings created by Hundertwasser in Bregenz in 1947, such as a steamship in front of a mountain range and a villa with a blooming garden. In total, around 60 works by Hundertwasser are illuminated in the exhibition, featuring a riot of colors, crooked houses, sphere trees, and spirals.
This is not the first modern art exhibition in Lindau. Since 2011, the city has hosted exhibitions featuring works by artists such as Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Henri Matisse, and Paul Klee. The "Kunstforum Hundertwasser" exhibition, initiated by Hans Braumüller and Klaus Rupp (aka Merlin), was a significant part of this series, attracting nearly 90,000 visitors in 2019.
The exhibition "The Right to Dream" is not the last in the series. The fourth and final part of the exhibition series, "The Path to the Green City," will explore Hundertwasser's vision of nature- and human-friendly architecture, starting in 2029. In between, the second part of the series, "The Art of Diversity," is scheduled for spring 2026.
The success of these exhibitions has been impressive. Collectively, they have attracted approximately 800,000 visitors. The city aims to build on this success with the new Kunstforum Hundertwasser, which is planned for 2027/2028 to mark the 100th anniversary of Friedensreich Hundertwasser's birth.
Visitors to "The Right to Dream" exhibition have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Hundertwasser's unique and captivating vision. The exhibition is on display for the next five years, offering a chance for both locals and tourists to experience this remarkable collection of art.
