Huge Oracle-supported data center in Texas to rely on gas power, according to a report

Oracle's latest project, the Frontier campus, is taking shape in Shackelford County, Texas. This megasite, developed by Vantage Data Centers, is set to become one of the world's largest data centers, with a capacity of 1.4 gigawatts.

The Frontier campus is designed to handle ultra-high-density racks of 250 kilowatts or more, making it ideal for next-generation GPU workloads and meeting AI computing needs. This focus on AI computing aligns with Oracle's strategic growth area, as the company continues to reinvent itself from a database pioneer to a cloud services provider.

Oracle's cloud services offer a "bare metal" approach, providing dedicated machines to customers for faster and more secure operations. This approach is expected to be implemented at the Frontier campus, contributing to its efficiency and performance.

Construction on the Frontier campus is already underway, with the first building expected to be ready in the second half of 2026. The company plans to spend more than $1 billion a year to operate the megasite using gas generators, demonstrating the urgency to get these facilities online.

However, the decision to run the site on gas has raised concerns about its environmental impact. The use of gas-powered turbines is expected to have significant human and environmental impacts, similar to the criticism faced by the xAI supercomputer in Memphis, powered by methane turbines.

Oracle's reputation for handling AI projects has grown quickly, landing major deals with some of the biggest tech companies in the world. One significant deal was TikTok moving its U.S. traffic to Oracle's servers, generating more than $1 billion in annual revenue by 2022.

Moreover, OpenAI agreed to develop about 4.5 gigawatts of data center power with Oracle, as part of Ellison's firm's massive AI collaborations, including the Stargate project.

The Frontier campus will host 10 data centers totaling 3.7 million square feet, further solidifying Oracle's position as a major player in the AI computing industry. As the construction progresses, the Frontier campus is set to revolutionize the landscape of AI computing, offering unparalleled power and efficiency for next-generation GPU workloads.
