Huércal-Overa’s 29th Folk Festival Celebrates Tradition with Music and Dance

Huércal-Overa has just celebrated its 29th annual Encuentro de Cuadrillas Juan de Dios Alcolea, a festival dedicated to traditional music, dance, and community. The event, organised by the local council and the folkloric group Coros y Danzas Virgen del Río, brought together performers from across the region for a day of lively celebrations.

The festivities began with a traditional breakfast of churros and chocolate. Afterwards, a street parade filled the town with the sounds of guitars, bandurrias, and parrandas. Groups such as the local Cuadrilla de Ánimas de Huércal-Overa were joined by visiting ensembles from Vélez Rubio, Aguaderas (Lorca), and Pulpí.

This year’s event confirmed Huércal-Overa’s reputation as a vibrant centre of folkloric tradition. Held near the start of the festive season, the Encuentro de Cuadrillas helps boost local social life and tourism. The festival remains a key moment for passing traditions between generations and reinforcing community identity.
