Hamburger SV Extends Coaching Team's Contracts for Two More Years
Stefan Kuntz, the sporting director of Hamburger SV, has announced the extension of the coaching team's contracts, led by Merlin Polzin, for two more years. The news comes before the start of the new Bundesliga season, providing the team with security for the upcoming tasks in the league.
Merlin Polzin, a native of Hamburg, joined Hamburger SV as assistant coach for the 2020/21 season. He was officially confirmed as head coach of the club in 2025, making him the youngest coach in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga at 34 years old. Polzin took over the team at the end of November 2024 when the team was in eighth place. Alongside him, Loic Fave and Richard Krohn also joined the coaching team during the same period.
The trio led Hamburger SV back to the Bundesliga after seven years in the second division, with an average of 1.86 points per game. Kuntz, in his statement, expressed his readiness to tackle the challenges of the Bundesliga with Merlin, Loic, and Richi in a sustainable manner. He further said that the extension signals a clear commitment to continuity and trust in the existing coaching team.
Merlin Polzin expressed his pride in being the head coach of HSV, a club in his home city. He also stated that the extension was made out of full conviction, acknowledging the significance of HSV to the people of Hamburg. Kuntz further added that the Bundesliga awaits them with a tough competition, but they are ready to face the challenges head-on.
