How to handle a hornet's nest in your backyard?
In the quaint city of Lünen, a remarkable event unfolded in August 2025. Rayat Chada, a local resident, discovered a hornet nest had taken over a birdhouse in his garden. Recognising the importance of protecting these insects, Chada contacted the responsible authority to handle the situation.
Enter Ralf Schmidt, a seasoned beekeeper with 40 years of experience, who was more than happy to assist. Schmidt was relieved to find that the hornets were not the Asian relatives of the European hornet, as these invasive species pose a significant threat to native ecosystems.
Upon arrival, Schmidt took necessary precautions, carefully removing branches around the nest to ensure a smooth relocation. He used a cardboard box as a replacement nest, gently placing the hornet colony inside. The box was then hung back on the tree for the animals to calm down overnight.
The next day, the lid of the cardboard box was closed, and the hornets began their journey to a nature reserve, where they can build a new nest undisturbed. This protected habitat is specifically designed to house such colonies, allowing them to thrive without disturbance.
The European hornet, despite its intimidating appearance, plays a crucial role in the ecosystem, particularly as a predator of other insect pests. However, due to their protected status, it is essential that they are handled with care and expertise, as demonstrated by Schmidt.
Chada, respecting the nest's protected status, did not approach it himself. This article is based on conversations with Ralf Schmidt, the beekeeper, and Rayat Chada, as well as observations by the website reporter on site.
As the hornets settle into their new home, Lünen's nature reserve can look forward to the benefits these fascinating creatures bring to their ecosystem. The successful relocation of Schmidt's hornet nests marks another triumph in the ongoing efforts to conserve and protect our planet's biodiversity.
