How the Pursuit of Excellence Is Reshaping Education and Research

The idea of excellence has evolved far beyond its noble origins. Once tied to aristocracy, it now represents high achievement in education, research, and innovation. Governments and universities are actively shaping this shift through targeted strategies and funding. The word excellence traces back to the Latin excellentia, meaning magnificence. By the early modern period, it had come to signify exceptional quality. Yet its broader impact—how great thinkers shape society—has puzzled scholars since ancient times.

Today, excellence is no longer an inherited privilege. It can be developed through structured learning, whether in technical fields at elite universities or via online platforms like Coursera and Udemy. The German government has reinforced this approach. In June, the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space unveiled an *excellence strategy* to boost research competitiveness. This builds on earlier efforts, including an *excellence initiative* by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. TU Dresden stands as a prime example. Since 2012, it has held *excellence university* status and successfully defended it in March 2026. With five new excellence clusters, the institution has grown more interdisciplinary and international, drawing top researchers. The Berlin University Alliance and other leading institutions have also secured funding under the same strategy. While perfection remains out of reach, the pursuit of it drives progress. Reducing cognitive deficits—through education or innovation—can lower economic and psychological harm. Often, the best ideas emerge from unconventional thinking techniques, not textbooks. Excellence, then, is not a brand but a careful balance of skill, creativity, and persistence.

The push for excellence now spans universities, digital learning, and government-backed research. Institutions like TU Dresden and the Berlin University Alliance demonstrate its real-world effects. As funding and strategies expand, the focus remains on turning ambition into measurable achievement. The goal is clear: foster environments where high-quality thinking leads to lasting impact.
