How Jo Abergel is transforming responsible gambling from within

Jo Abergel, a leading voice in responsible gambling, has spent 15 years shaping ethical practices in the iGaming sector. Based in Gibraltar, she co-founded the Ethical Gambling Forum and now serves as a judge for the upcoming LinkedIn Awards. Her work focuses on improving industry standards through training, collaboration, and advocacy.

Abergel began her career in leadership training before shifting her focus to responsible gambling. In 2009, she launched the Ethical Gambling Forum to bring together researchers, therapists, regulators, and affiliates. The initiative aimed to foster open dialogue and drive meaningful change across the industry.

One of the forum's key achievements was developing the RG Check tool in 2011. This ISO 27001-compliant self-assessment system has been adopted by over 100 operators. It also influenced regulations in major markets like Malta, the UK, and Sweden.

Abergel stresses that ethical gambling varies by operator but requires constant improvement. She advocates for upskilling safer gambling teams, particularly in suicide prevention, arguing that better training benefits both players and businesses. Her approach also includes equipping industry professionals with the confidence to intervene when they spot signs of harm.

Through workshops and certifications, the forum has trained thousands of professionals worldwide. By 2025, operator audits linked to these programmes reported measurable drops in problem gambling rates. Abergel's work continues to push for standardised protocols and practical solutions on the ground.

Abergel's contributions extend beyond advocacy, as she also serves on the judges' panel for the LinkedIn Awards and supports the LinkedIn Academy. Her efforts highlight the need for ongoing collaboration and training to create a safer gambling environment. The industry's adoption of her initiatives reflects growing recognition of ethical responsibility as a core business priority.
