How Germany turned 1,700 wishes into reality in 2024

Across Germany in 2024, several initiatives worked to bring joy to those in need. From Hamburg to Bielefeld, organisations and campaigns stepped up to fulfil personal wishes for children, young people and homeless individuals. Each effort relied on community support to turn small dreams into reality.

In Hamburg, Budnianer Hilfe e.V. made the biggest impact by granting more wishes than any other group. The charity continued its tradition of generosity with a €10,000 donation, focusing on children and young people facing hardship.

Meanwhile, Bielefeld University and the von Bodelschwingh Foundation Bethel launched the Wishing Star Campaign. Residents wrote their wishes on paper stars and hung them on a 'wishing tree' at the university. Participation was open to all, either in person or online via aktion-wunschstern.de. By the end of 2024, the campaign had fulfilled 1,700 wishes.

For homeless individuals, the StreetBLUES Association took a personal approach. Volunteers collected specific requests—ranging from perfume and shoe vouchers to smartphones—and matched them with donors. All 20 wishes submitted in 2024 were granted. Beyond gifts, the group also created a warm, festive space where recipients could connect and share conversations.

Parents seeking help for their children could turn to Children in Poverty e.V.. The organisation allowed registrations through its website, requiring proof of eligibility. Donors could then browse an online shop, purchasing a €30 gift that covered both the present and associated costs. The charity ensured every penny went directly to the gifts, with operational expenses funded separately.

These efforts show how targeted support can make a difference. In 2024, thousands of wishes—big and small—were fulfilled through direct donations, online platforms, and community engagement. Each organisation provided a clear way for people to contribute, ensuring help reached those who needed it most.
