In a significant development, the Israeli air force carried out an attack on Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, on Thursday. The attack targeted a "military target of the Houthi terrorist regime" in the Sanaa area.

The attack resulted in the death of Yemen's Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahaui, who was appointed by the Houthi organization last year, and several ministers. Al-Rahaui, like his predecessors, was considered a symbolic figure with little real power. Upon announcing al-Rahaui's death, Mohammed Ahmed was immediately named as the successor and acting prime minister by the Houthi's highest political council. Mohammed Ahmed previously served as al-Rahaui's deputy.

The Houthi militia, officially known as "Ansar Allah" ("Supporters of God"), has been conducting attacks since the beginning of the Gaza war nearly two years ago. The militia, which is not internationally recognized, has been attacking commercial ships and occasionally Israel. The declared aim of the Houthi attacks is to support the Palestinians.

Despite being considered the strongest force in Yemen, the Houthi militia is not internationally recognized. A civil war has been raging in Yemen since 2014. The Houthi government in Sanaa and northern Yemen, which the militia has controlled for nearly a decade, will continue its work following the attack.

The Houthi militia's leader is Abdel Malik al-Huthi, whose brother founded the Shia organization about 30 years ago. The current interim Prime Minister of the Houthi government controlling Sanaa, Yemen, is Mohammed Miftah, appointed following the death of the previous Prime Minister Ahmed Ghaleb al-Rahwi in an Israeli airstrike in August 2024.

It is important to note that the Houthi militia has been supporting the Palestinians in their ongoing conflict with Israel. The Houthi militia has been conducting attacks on commercial ships and occasionally Israel as part of their efforts to support the Palestinians.

The Houthi government, which is not internationally recognized, announced the death of Ahmed al-Rahaui and the ministers. The Israeli air force has not yet issued a statement regarding the attack. The situation in Yemen remains tense, and further developments are expected.
