Turbulent racism discolors the triumph of the basketball team in the EM championship - Hostility based on racial bias overshadows the title contest
In the heart of the EuroBasket tournament, Germany's basketball team delivered a performance reminiscent of the intense competition and drama witnessed in the 2022 EM clash in Cologne. The team, unstoppable and on track for a medal, is now gearing up for the final round in Riga on September 14.
However, the team's journey hasn't been without challenges. The game against Lithuania presented Germany with its first real challenge at this EM. Dennis Schröder, a key player, experienced racist taunts during the game, with monkey noises directed at him. The German captain reported the incident, and two individuals were subsequently removed from the Nokia Arena.
Schröder, personally offended and angry by the jeers, continued to give his best, scoring 26 points in the game. He was not alone in his efforts. Daniel Theis, the X-factor of the team, contributed 23 points and made all nine of his shots, securing the 100th point from the free throw line in the game.
Theis' strong defense and offensive prowess were instrumental in Germany's success. The team, despite facing resistance during the game, unlike their previous matches against Montenegro and Sweden, managed to maintain their composure and emerge victorious.
After the break, the game remained engaging, with both teams playing quality basketball. Germany's 21:3 run fizzled out, and Lithuania fought back, making the game competitive. Franz Wagner, another standout player, scored 24 points in the game.
Looking ahead, the German team aims to win against Britain on Monday (15:30 CET, MagentaSport and RTL) and Finland on Wednesday (19:30 CET) to secure the top spot in the group. Winning the group is crucial to avoid top favorite Serbia, led by NBA star Nikola Jokic, as long as possible.
Coach Alan Ibrahimagic noticed Schröder's upset reaction and stated that such things have no place in sports. The team, resilient and determined, continues to focus on their goal - to bring home a medal from EuroBasket 2022.
