Hostages, including an Irish missionary, liberated in Haiti

Armed perpetrators broke into the orphanage, snatching five children and several adults, including family members of Gena Heraty. The "400 Mawozo" gang, one of the most notorious gangs in Haiti, is suspected to be behind this heinous act, having kidnapped 17 missionaries in 2021.

The kidnapping of the St. Helene orphanage's residents is particularly distressing given that five of the hostages were children. The orphanage cares for over 200 children, providing them with a home and a sense of family.

The Irish Foreign Ministry has taken the lead in coordinating the release efforts for the family of Gena Heraty. The Heraty family has been closely involved in the legal and diplomatic communications, working tirelessly to secure the safe return of their loved ones.

Unfortunately, no street gang has yet claimed responsibility for the kidnapping at the St. Helene orphanage. The "400 Mawozo" gang's silence does not lessen the gravity of the situation.

The first six months of this year have been particularly violent in Haiti, with over 3,000 people killed and 336 kidnapped. The "400 Mawozo" gang's actions are a stark reminder of the ongoing violence and lawlessness that plagues the nation.
