Hospital industry sees signs of revival
The German Federal Statistical Office (Statististisches Bundesamt) has released its tourism statistics and press releases, revealing the state of the hospitality industry in North Rhine-Westphalia for July 2020.
Despite the ongoing pandemic, the industry showed signs of recovery in some areas. The restaurant sector, for instance, experienced a turnover increase of 16.0% compared to the previous month. This improvement continued in the beverage-serving gastronomy sector, which saw a recovery of 14.3% compared to June 2020.
However, compared to the same month the previous year, the restaurant sector still faced a 21.5% lower turnover in nominal terms, and a 26.7% decrease in real terms. The beverage-serving gastronomy sector also recorded a 43.0% lower turnover in real terms.
The hotel industry also demonstrated some signs of recovery, with a 27.8% and 18.5% increase in turnover compared to June 2020, respectively. Yet, in real terms, the industry suffered a significant loss, with a 50.9% decrease in turnover compared to the same month the previous year.
Accommodation sector also showed some improvement, with a 30.5% recovery in turnover compared to June 2020. However, in comparison to the same month the previous year, accommodation turnover was 46.3% lower in nominal terms and 48.1% lower in real terms.
The overall turnover in the North Rhine-Westphalian hospitality industry was 32.4% lower in July 2020, adjusted for price changes, compared to the same month the previous year. For the first seven months of 2020, the real turnover decrease for the industry was 36.4%, and the nominal decrease was 34.5%, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
The data also revealed a decrease in employment within the industry, with the number of employees being 14.3% lower in July 2020 than in July 2019.
These findings underscore the ongoing challenges faced by the hospitality industry in North Rhine-Westphalia amidst the pandemic, despite some signs of recovery. The industry continues to struggle, with decreased turnover and employment, and the need for ongoing support and measures to aid in its recovery.
