Honoring Durham's rich heritage at the House of Lords events
The 2023 Dunelm Society Reunion, held at the prestigious House of Lords on November 16, was a celebration of all things Durham. Organised by alumni Graham Barker (Law, Van Mildert College, 1980) and Sandra Jones (English Literature, Trevelyan College, 1980), the event attracted 120 guests, including members of the alumni and supporter community, University colleagues, and the victorious University Challenge team.
The evening was a black-tie affair, featuring a keynote speech, speeches, and a sumptuous dinner. The University Challenge team, who are current Durham University students, were also in attendance. Representatives from all 17 of the University's Colleges were present, making for a truly representative gathering.
The keynote speech was delivered by Professor Karen O'Brien, a distinguished academic at Durham University. Her speech focused on the theme of continuity between the University's foundation in 1832 and its current strategy. She discussed the rapid changes that have occurred since the University's inception and the enduring values that have remained constant.
Professor O'Brien's speech also referenced Bishop Van Mildert's role in establishing Durham University. This historical connection was a fitting reminder of the University's rich history and the contributions of its founders.
The event was hosted by alumnus Viscount Colville (History, St Chad's College, 1981), who provided a warm and engaging atmosphere throughout the evening. An image showing 11 individuals who attended the reunion was provided, offering a glimpse into the lively and engaging atmosphere of the event.
While information about the person who gave the keynote speech at the 2023 revival of the Dunelm Society is not available, the event undoubtedly served as a reminder of the University's past, present, and future. It was a night of reminiscing, networking, and looking forward to the continued success of Durham University.
