Holiday Travel Forecast by ADAC: August 29-31 - Return Journey

With the summer holidays in full swing, many travellers are heading to their destinations, but the return journey could prove challenging, according to the ADAC. Several routes are expected to be problematic for travelers, including the Tauern, Inntal, Rheintal, Pyhrn, Fernpass, Brenner, Karawanken, and Gotthard routes, as well as motorways leading to the coasts of Italy, Croatia, and France.

The ADAC predicts numerous and long traffic jams on return routes from holiday regions over the last weekend in August. Main connections from Poland, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Northern Europe are also expected to be problematic. Particularly congested routes, both directions, include the A1 Lübeck - Hamburg - Bremen - Dortmund, A3 Passau - Nuremberg - Frankfurt - Cologne, A5 Basel - Karlsruhe - Heidelberg - Hattenbach Triangle, A6 Mannheim - Heilbronn - Nuremberg, A7 Flensburg - Hamburg, A7 Füssen/Reutte - Ulm - Würzburg - Kassel, A8 Salzburg - Munich - Stuttgart - Karlsruhe, A9 Munich - Nuremberg - Halle/Leipzig - Berlin, A10 Berlin Ring, A11 Uckermark Triangle - Berlin, A19 Rostock - Wittstock Triangle, A24 Pritzwalk - Berlin, A61 Ludwigshafen - Koblenz - Mönchengladbach, A93 Inntaldreieck - Kufstein, A95/B2 Munich - Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and A99 Munich bypass.

Construction sites, more towards the end of the holiday season, are particularly prone to congestion. The summer holidays in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg will continue for another two weeks, leading to lively traffic in the direction of the south. Many weekend getaway drivers, hikers, and late holidaymakers will be on the road, especially on good weather days.

The seasonal weekend truck driving ban will be in effect for the last time this year on August 30. Cars will also be backed up in neighbouring countries over the last weekend in August, particularly on routes leading to Germany and Austria. Return waves and late starters will meet, resulting in a high risk of traffic jams, particularly in southern Germany. Everyday commuter traffic will also cause increasing delays.

Those returning from Greece or Turkey should allow for several hours of waiting time. Long waits can be expected at the border crossings A4 Ludwigsdorf (Görlitz), A11 Pomellen (Stettin), A12 Frankfurt (Oder), and A15 Forst. Controls are also carried out on the Polish side, but to varying degrees.

The most likely destinations for travellers returning from Southern Europe to Germany at the end of August are popular beach and holiday regions such as Mallorca, the Canary Islands, and coastal areas in Spain including Andalusia and the Costa del Sol, as well as Mediterranean spots like the Greek islands (Rhodes, Crete) and Croatia’s Adriatic coast (Zlatni Rat beach on Brac island). Holidays will end in Hamburg, Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schleswig-Holstein, the middle of the Netherlands, and in the three Austrian federal states of Burgenland, Lower Austria, and Vienna.
