Hội An's 21st Japan Cultural Exchange celebrates two decades of shared heritage

The 21st Hội An - Japan Cultural Exchange officially opened in Hội An ancient town on the evening of December 26. The three-day event marks two decades of strengthening ties between Vietnam and Japan through shared cultural traditions and modern creativity. This year's festival arrives as the historic town becomes part of Đà Nẵng City, bringing fresh opportunities for collaboration.

Hội An was once a thriving international trading port in the 16th and 17th centuries, serving as a key meeting point between Eastern and Western cultures. Today, the annual exchange builds on that legacy, deepening mutual understanding between the two nations. Bilateral relations reached a new high in 2023 when Vietnam and Japan elevated their partnership to a Comprehensive Strategic level.

The festival blends tradition with contemporary expression, featuring events like Japanese doll exhibitions, cosplay, and calligraphy demonstrations. Traditional processions will wind through the town, while tea ceremonies, Taiko drumming, and Origami workshops showcase Japan's cultural heritage. Modern elements, including anime workshops and joint art installations, also take centre stage. Over the past 20 years, cities such as Nara, Kyoto, Osaka, and Sakai have regularly contributed to the exchange. Their participation has introduced Vietnamese audiences to Japanese arts, from Kalligraphie to Taiko performances. Organisers say the event helps preserve traditional identities while promoting cultural values in today's world.
