Cincinnati Bengals Make Major Moves in Contract Extensions

The Cincinnati Bengals have made a bold statement in the NFL with record-breaking contract extensions for wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. The deals, worth $161 million for Chase and $115 million for Higgins, make them the highest-paid non-quarterback and fifth and sixth highest-paid wide receivers in the league respectively.

Dhani Jones, a former Bengals linebacker, praised the team's recent approach to retention, calling it a clear message to the fan base that they're looking to remain competitive and get back to the Super Bowl. The Bengals reached the Super Bowl in 2022 but narrowly lost to the Los Angeles Rams.

The Bengals' front office reputation of not paying market value isn't entirely fair, especially given their recent spending. The team increased Trey Hendrickson's salary to $30 million for the 2025 season, indicating a significant allocation of their salary cap towards key players. This move comes as the Bengals have not publicly disclosed their exact salary cap space for 2025, but they are likely to rank in the top 10 of total cap allocation in 2025.

The Bengals had not ranked in the top five of total cap allocation since 2016 before 2024. However, they have been in the top 20 of salary cash totals since 2023. The team spent $40 million last year on upgrades, including renovating the locker room and training room.

The Bengals' locker room earned an A+ grade in the latest NFLPA report, while their food and dining areas received an F grade. The team has a makeshift indoor facility near Paycor Stadium, but they are looking to find a permanent indoor practice facility.

The Bengals' roster is looking strong with the re-signing of Joe Burrow's two favorite targets, Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Trey Hendrickson, a standout defensive end, is eligible to become a free agent next year. The Bengals are the lowest-valued team in the NFL per Sportico's valuations.

Meanwhile, the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles have extended quarterback Jalen Hurts, wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, and star running back Saquon Barkley. The Bengals will need to maintain their spending momentum to remain competitive in the league.
