Studio Henry Wilson Opens First Showroom in Sydney

Studio Henry Wilson, a renowned design studio known for its emphasis on hand-made craftsmanship and sustainable practices, has opened its first showroom in Sydney, Australia. The new store is located at 87 Paddington Street, beneath the old Scout Hall.

The interior of the store, previously a meeting room and library for architect Madeleine Blanchfield, has been transformed into a collector's apartment-style space. Warm white walls act as a canvas for the displayed work, with an elongated steel plinth running through the interior serving as both a display area and storage for merchandise.

The store features a variety of Australian-made pieces, including glassware, linen, handmade pure wood incense, oils from Perfumer H and Aesop, and personal care products from To My Ships. Studio Henry Wilson's designs, characterised by their utilitarianism and form and function, are also on display.

Founder of Studio Henry Wilson, Wilson, draws inspiration for his designs from the Australian landscape, particularly its arid nature and unpredictable weather. He values weathering in his designs, believing that subtle imperfections during manufacture add to their character.

Wilson struggles to justify the commercial aspect of the store but sees it as a place for the community to meet and for the public to see, feel, and sense the work they produce. The uneven floors and pressed tin ceiling in the store help to modernize the space.

The store also serves as a platform for other beautiful and functional items, aside from Wilson's own designs. Wilson's designs specialise in furniture, lighting, accessories, and components in metal, stone, and glass.
