Heidi Gardner and Michael Longfellow are some of the popular actors departing from Saturday Night Live (SNL)
Saturday Night Live (SNL) is preparing for a significant change as several cast members and writers are departing before the start of its 51st season. Among those leaving are Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker, Emil Wakim, Celeste Yim, Heidi Gardner, and John Higgins.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Devon Walker compared his time on SNL to a turbulent marriage, writing about the highs and lows of his tenure. Michael Longfellow, who was promoted to the main cast at the start of the 50th season, also announced his departure on Instagram, expressing gratitude for his time on the show. Longfellow thanked Lorne Michaels for giving him the opportunity and for putting his mother on TV.
Heidi Gardner, the longest-running female member of the current cast, is also leaving after eight seasons. Gardner gained popularity for her over-the-top characters on Weekend Update. Emil Wakim, who made history as the first Lebanese-American SNL cast member, also announced his exit, expressing gratitude for his time on the show.
Celeste Yim, who is the first out trans person to be a writer for SNL, is leaving after five seasons. Yim brought memorable characters to the Weekend Update desk, including Bailey Gismert, Your Co-worker who is Extremely Busy Doing Seemingly Nothing, and Angel from Every Boxer's Girlfriend from Every Movie about Boxing Ever. Yim also mentioned some of her favourite early sketches, including parodies of L'eggs and the It Gets Better campaign.
Rosebud Baker, who arrived at SNL as a writer midway through Season 47 and joined its Weekend Update writing team at the start of the last season, is also leaving. Baker took to Instagram to announce her own national tour starting in the fall.
It is customary for cast members to announce their exit when a season ends or before a new one begins. SNL creator and producer Lorne Michaels has confirmed that James Austin Johnson will continue parodying President Trump.
Longfellow played roles in popular sketches such as Goth Kid on Vacation, a death at a waterpark, and a game show host trying to offload his pet tortoise. Walker portrayed politicians and celebrities, including Republican Sen. Tim Scott, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, and TV host Michael Strahan. Wakim brought his unique perspective to Weekend Update segments.
In a move that may disappoint some fans, Heidi Gardner is also leaving the show. Gardner's departure marks the end of an era for SNL, as she was one of the longest-standing members of the current cast.
As SNL prepares for a new season, it will be interesting to see who will fill the void left by these talented individuals. The show's 51st season is set to begin in the fall.
