Heavy Rainfall and Flooding Crisis in Mumbai: Transport Disruptions, School Cancellations Ensue

In the heart of India, Mumbai city is battling against the relentless monsoon rains that have turned its roads into streams and caused significant disruptions. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and surrounding districts, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on August 18 and 19, 2025. The red alert is the highest level warning and indicates very heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm in 24 hours.

The red alert is expected to end by Wednesday morning, August 20, 2025, with continued heavy rainfall forecasted until at least Friday, August 22, 2025. In response to the hazardous conditions, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for all schools and colleges.

Despite the flooding, metro (BEST) services continued operating, providing a lifeline for many commuters. However, suburban trains were delayed by 10-20 minutes due to the rain, causing inconvenience for thousands of passengers. Road traffic was nearly stalled, especially on the Western Express Highway, with local road traffic being significantly impacted.

One of the most distressing incidents occurred in Matunga, where a school bus carrying six students and two staff members became stranded in deep water near King's Circle. The Matunga Police successfully rescued everyone from the stranded school bus through knee-deep floodwater, commending the team for their prompt action during the crisis.

The city's infrastructure and emergency preparedness have come under scrutiny as a result of these monsoon spells. Areas like Andheri Subway, Lokhandwala Complex, and Chembur continue to be severely impacted by heavy waterlogging, significantly affecting pedestrian and vehicle movement.

The IMD continues to warn of heavy showers in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and nearby districts for the next few days. Staying informed, cautious, and indoors is advised as Mumbai braces for more rain this week. The orange alert remains active for the next day, indicating the possibility of heavy rain.

Seasonal totals at observatories like Colaba and Santacruz have exceeded 1,000 mm, with Chembur, Kandivli, and Dadar recording over 160 mm of rainfall within 6-8 hours. The Mumbai Rains have resulted in 177 mm of rainfall within the same timeframe.

The BMC has not issued any new announcements regarding school or college holidays, urging the citizens to stay safe and follow the advice of local authorities. The city's resilience and spirit remain unbroken as Mumbai continues to weather the storm, demonstrating its indomitable spirit in the face of adversity.
